As part of St Mary’s link with Mozambique (see main Mozambique section) we were introduced to Virgilio, who was one of the street boys in Maputo. These are young people who have been orphaned by the Aids epidemic in Mozambique or whose parents have died from malaria or have simply turned them into the street because they have no means to support them. Joe and Lorraine Williams met Virgilio through the programme of support for the street boys run by Imagine. They discovered that he had a talent for art and bought him materials so that he could begin to sell pictures to support himself.
St Mary’s were pleased to be able to commission the banners pictured here which are now hung from the pillars in the church from time to time. The banners depict scenes appropriate to four seasons in the church’s year:
Noah’s Ark - Advent
The Wedding at Cana - Epiphany
Jesus in the Wilderness - Lent
Mary Magdalene and Jesus - Easter
