Five Tales to Canterbury
A dramatised reading taken from Chaucer's Canterbury tales.
Performed on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th June 2005

The St. Mary Magdalene Drama Group celebrates its 40th birthday in 2003. Throughout that time the Group has been a source of fellowship and entertainment for the congregation and friends of St. Mary Magdalene Church. The Group meets every Wednesday at 8.30 pm in the Church Vestry. We put on two major productions in the Church Hall in May and November and often do smaller scale productions at other times in the year.

In addition to the productions we also hold play readings and arrange theatre trips. The Group warmly welcomes new members of all ages. Productions not only need actors and audience, but also friends to help with the stage work, properties, lighting, front of house, box office etc.

If you can lend a voice, hand or hammer and would like to know more about the Group or about our forthcoming production please come along one Wednesday or contact the Drama Group Secretary - Chris Moon 020 8216 5907

"JAKE'S WOMEN" by Neil Simon. A Play in Two Acts - Jake has always had problems with the women in his life; now even the ones in his head are causing him trouble.

"KINDLY LEAVE THE STAGE" by John Chapman. A Play in Two Acts - A dinner party goes terribly wrong and someone is looking for a place to hide ....

"LADIES IN RETIREMENT" A Victorian Thriller by Edward Percy & Reginald Denham was performed in November 2003. "Arguably the finest stage thriller ever written." In a remote, lonely house on the Thames marshes an ex-actress lives with her companion Ellen Creed. A visit from Ellen's eccentric family does little to suggest what lies ahead. The arrival of their nephew Albert only adds to the mystery and suspense, as his own shadowy past complicates recent events.

"Fools" by Neil Simon in May 2003
In May 2003 the Group performed ‘Fools’ by Neil Simon. Set in Kulyenchikov, a remote village in the Ukraine, the play centres on the arrival in town of a new schoolmaster Leon Tolchinsky. He soon discovers that the inhabitants of the village are all stupid, having been cursed 200 years earlier. Leon only has 24 hours to break the curse by educating the villagers, or he too will succumb to the curse. Not only are the villagers unintelligent, they claim that there is no love in their village – they don’t know what it is. A world without love is a foolish place and it is love that eventually breaks the curse and saves Leon and the villagers.

A thriller by the author of 'Paul Temple' was staged in November 2002 by St Mary's drama group. Not so much a 'who dun it' as a 'will he get away with it'.
